Back on March 11, 2022 I had the pleasure of meeting Bob Mitchell from Plane-R-Wing planer boards at the Ultimate Sports Show in Grand Rapids. Bob was showing off his innovated new planer boards called the Plane-R-Wing. As a follower of all things salmon tackle and equipment through Sweet Water Trolling, I am always excited and interested in seeing new products. Especially those that strive to create change in the industry through new innovation and use of new technology.
Let’s be honest planer boards haven’t changed much in design in the 35 or so years. Yeah there have been some improvements with the methods of clipping the line to the boards through new clip design or the likes of Dreamweaver’s Ninja boards, but most planer boards have had pretty much the same shape until now.
The Plane-R-Wings’ unique wing or foil design is similar to an airplane wing. The foil creates curved streamlines which results in lower pressure on one side and higher pressure on the other. This generates lift that will allow the board to track better and more in-line with your boat even in rough water conditions.
Also unlike most planer boards, because Plane-R-Wing’s are 3-D printed, this allows for a greater range of customization. Which includes being able to choose from a variety of colors, custom embossing, different release options and a magnetic ballast system. It truly is a unique system.
Anyway, flash forward to 5/11/2022 when I received a pair Plane-R-Wing planer boards to test out. My boards came embossed with my boat name and phone number. In addition, they came with a spare set of Cabela’s pressure lock snaps and set of 0.25 and 0.50 oz ballast weights.
A big shout out to Bob Mitchell for giving me the opportunity to try these boards out. I can’t wait to put them to the test in the coming days. I really think these boards are going to out perform traditional planer boards. Watch for more information and updates in the coming weeks!
